Ask any wayward yachtsman who’s crossed the Pacific with a surfboard and a fishing rod, and chances are you’ll hear Fanning Island described in hushed tones.
Fanning Island (also known as Tabuaeran) is part of Kiribati, an island republic in the Central Pacific, comprised of 33 coral atolls stretching along the equator.
Accessible only by boat for over a decade, and now only reliably accessible via Pegasus Lodges private air charters from Christmas Island (after a three hour flight from Hawaii), we are proud to share this beautiful and rare vestige of unspoiled Pacific.
The Fanning Island Lodge guesthouse, 'A la Belle Etoile', is rustic and comfortable, and offers a perfect immersion into the beautiful, simple culture of Fanning Island.
Built slowly and lovingly over a period of 20 years by proprietor, Bruno de Lala, and reminiscent of a Robinson Crusoe fantasy, A la Belle Etoile speaks to Bruno’s marine heritage – incorporating many items that came from the sailboat he foundered on the local reef many years back.
ACTIVITIES & GUEST SERVICES
There’s a range of waves on offer around the atoll – from an incredible left-hander that’s the stuff of legend, to high performance rights, to playful peaks and passes.
With its midway location in the equatorial Pacific, Fanning catches summer swells from the south and winter swells from the north.
The same south swells that hit Fiji and Tahiti extend up to Fanning after a day or two. Similarly, winter swells that grace Hawaii reach Fanning in about 24 hours – with the benefit of grooming themselves to long-period perfection.
The benefits of a great surf guide are never more apparent than here on Fanning Island.
Located, literally in the middle of the Pacific, the nuances of swell and wind direction are sometimes mysterious, and local knowledge is critical to getting the very best out of each day’s surfing.
Our guide will ensure you get the best waves possible in your time here, (and of course they’re pretty switched on to the fishing as well).
Who knows, if the stars align, you might even have your guide to thank for the best waves of your life. (Big call, we know, but when the left is on… it’s ON!)
International flights reach Christmas Island’s Cassidy International Airport from either Fiji or Hawaii.
From there it’s a 90-minute charter flight to the Tabuaeran Airstrip on Fanning Island.
From Tabuaeran Airstrip it’s a short transfer to the ferry that takes an hour to cross Fanning Island’s expansive and astonishing internal lagoon. And once the ferry ride is done, a five minute stroll sees you darken the doorway of Fanning Island Lodge!
