Our Surfing Guides

Aboard the Ratu Motu, we take guiding very seriously and invest a great deal of time and resources into hiring and developing the best guides in the world. Our surf guides are world-class surfers who focus on enhancing guest experiences, not their own.

We can also arrange for specialist guides to supplement our team in regions where their expertise adds to the guest experience. Our guides ensure your time is maximized, and match a wave’s degree of difficulty, a day hike’s duration or a dive’s technical aspects with your own individual ability level and comfort zone.

Our “Safety first” record speaks for itself; all our guides are qualified and well-trained in emergency procedures. We also continually evaluate our safety and risk management processes in consultation with industry-leading authorities. Guidance, hazard identification, equipment, emergency plans… We’re serious about prevention and we’re serious about making sure your experience is memorable.

The Surf Spots

The surf off the West Coast of Sumatra is without a doubt the world’s greatest collection of quality reef breaks. A combination of factors include the longest fetch area in an ocean, a proliferation of quality reefs, 1000′s of small islands and light and variable breezes to provide what is known as the “Surfing Disneyland”. Anyone who has picked up a surfing magazine or watched a surfing movie in the last 10 years has dreamed of the surf off the West Coast of Sumatra. Simply put, this region is the ultimate surfer’s destination and Ratu Motu is the ultimate way to access the region.

Over the past 20 years operating in the region, we’ve had the privilege to “discover” many waves and surf a multitude of others. Whether you’re in search of deep barrels and dry reef or 3-6 foot ”gentleman’s surf” with you and a few mates, we’ll help make your dream a reality.

With literally hundreds of waves in the region, the surf in West Sumatra is ultra-consistent with lefts and rights that work on all tides, and opposite wind directions virtually guaranteeing off-shores every day. Best of all, the variety of surf offers many options for all levels of surfers and equipment.

Fill your days with adventure, in and out of the water. Our staff accommodates trip to the blowholes, eco-tours around the island, snorkeling sessions, and fishing excursions. Make the most of your time here.

SUP

Whether you’re a dedicated enthusiast, an opportunistic part-timer, or a curious first-timer, you’ll find our friendly, un-crowded waves are ideal for stand-up paddle-boarding.

WEST PAPUA - INDONESIA

Off the coast of Indonesia’s sparsely populated West Papua province lies the Raja Ampat archipelago. This seemingly endless maze of nearly 1,500 islands scattered across azure seas, was first explored in the mid 19th century by Alfred Wallace, a contemporary of Charles Darwin, and co–founder of the theory of natural selection. The region was not explored in detail until a 2001 survey, when a team of marine biologists cataloged 500 species of corals, and more than 1,300 species of fish. Designated a marine sanctuary by the Indonesian government, efforts are underway to protect the area further through designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In every sense, this is truly a special place.

Depending upon your port of embarkation, the airports of Eastern Indonesia can be accessed through hubs of Singapore, Jakarta and Denpasar, and are served by a number of domestic, international and charter airlines including Air Asia, Silk Air, Singapore Airlines, Express Air, Lion Air, Merpati Airlines, and Sriwijaya Airlines.

Regardless of arrival airport, guests are always greeted by Ratu Motu representatives and escorted to the vessel. All visitors to Indonesia must possess a valid passport and return air ticket. A 30-day tourist visa can be purchased upon arrival at a cost of US$35. Our guest concierge will follow-up with you prior to your trip to assist with any other travel arrangements you require.
