First things first. Telo Island Lodge has two world-class waves on its doorstep. There are 18 more breaks within an hour’s boat ride, with the majority less than 20 minutes away. Even by Indonesia’s standards, this is extraordinary. Our maximum guest capacity is limited to eight, and we have an industry-best guest-to-guide ratio of 4:1.

Telo Island Lodge provides one of the world’s foremost, best-serviced, surf travel experiences. We firmly tick ALL the boxes – the coldest beer, the best food, the most enjoyable waves, the most comfortable beds, the coolest bedrooms, the fastest, most comfortable transfer boat, the best safety protocols, the most experienced and friendly guides.

Situated lagoon-side in a protected pocket at the base of a small mountain, Telo Island Lodge overlooks Max’s Right – a gem of a wave, which provides an ever-changing outlook for our guests. The lodge itself is an open-plan, post-and-beam construction, fusing local North Sumatran architecture with western ideas. Spacious undercover decks and common areas are surrounded by manicured lawns and a tropical lagoon, where state-of-the-art surf transfer speedboats stand by.

Telo Island Lodge Surf Reports

The Surf Spots

THE BUBBLE
A spirited, wrapping, mechanically perfect righthander. The water clarity here has to be seen to be believed and has been the location of many fine tube rides. Many personal-best speed records have been achieved here. 10 minutes from the lodge.

MAX'S LEFT

A very long, bowling, walling left that will throw up the occasional tube section. The left is one of the most consistent breaks in the area, and is located directly behind the lodge, a mere two-minute boat ride away. Max’s left works on the opposite winds to Max’s Right, so one of our ‘locals’ is always offshore. The left has been the location of countless memorable sessions and is a returning guest favorite.

MAX'S RIGHT

A fun, sometimes challenging, bowling right out front of The Lodge that offers everything from hittable walls to tube rides. Less than 100 meters from your bedroom, this is our home break and it a sight to behold when it turns on.

GTs

The crown jewel. An intense but fun tubular right, about 20 minutes from the lodge, and named after Aussie surfing legend Grant Thomas (who holds the Telo Island Lodge Bintang record). GT’s has been compared to HT’s in the Mentawais – but without the shallow end section. This world-class tube has featured on the cover of many magazines.

PINNACLES

Set before one of the most stunning backdrops in the region, this super-fun right lies about eight minutes from the lodge. Pinnacles is a great longboard wave, and in certain conditions becomes one of the better breaks in the area.

JURASSIC PARK

An epic left point over coral, with a prehistoric backdrop. This is a wave of moods, from heart-in-mouth tubes to totally whackable walls. Located in southern part of our range, Jurassic Park requires a full days outing and a couple of hours in the speedboats to access – which is fitting for a trip back in time.

SCHOOL YARDS REGION

Made up of several separate waves, all of which work on different swell directions, the “yard” is about 10 minutes from the lodge and open to the full brunt of swell. Schoolyards can offer everything from a “Sunset Beach” style open-ocean peak, to fun hittable rights and lefts. A trip to the yard always draws a smile.

LE-BA

A pretty righthander that runs along the edge of a nearby island. Has been compared to Lagundri Bay. At three to five feet it may be one of the most enjoyable rights on the planet. Suits beginners to intermediate surfers. 10 minutes from the lodge.

THE E.R.

Made up of two separate reef passes, the E.R. features multiple lefts and rights. Best on a very light to medium swell, the E.R. has a wave suited to all levels of experience. Generally the surf needs to be flat at our other breaks for this to be its best. The E.R. is also home to some amazing live coral and snorkeling. 15 minutes from the lodge.

DISLOCATORS

A shallow, tubing left suited for intermediate and advanced surfers. Dislocators is in a region to the south that is more suited to the advanced level surfer willing to leave a little skin on the reef. 28 minutes from the lodge.

WEGS

Wegs equals Kegs. An amazing coral point, 35 minutes south of the lodge. Nothing but high-speed tubes.

Our Surfing Guides

A good surf guide understands the ocean. A great surf guide understands his guests. At Telo Island Lodge, our guides are the key to our success, and are responsible for countless guests riding the best waves of their lives. We invest seriously in hiring and developing the best surf guides in the world. World-Class surfers who focus on enhancing your experience, not their own.

HEALTH & SPA TREATMENTS

We have massage treatments to soothe the active body and mind. We also offer preventive maintenance to help you take advantage of your full trip, or recover from an injury. Or just relax and take a session off while everyone else goes for a surf.

ECO EXCURSIONS If you’re keen to explore the island, there’s a variety of options: visit an ancient mangrove forest, explore island terrestrial caves or volunteer in the village school for a day. Just let us know and we’ll arrange everything.

Situated off the west coast of Sumatra, and almost directly on the equator, Telo Island Lodge is ensconced in an archipelago known as “Kepulan Batu”, “Pulau Pulau Batu” or, more simply, the Telo islands.

We are in good company, with the Mentawai islands to the south, and Nias to the north, yet the islands in our group are unlike any in Sumatra, and are often compared to the dramatic cliff islands of Thailand, or the smaller islands in the Seychelles.

Due to the this remote location – and the fact it can only be accessed conveniently by private aircraft – The Telos remain largely unspoiled by the rampant development in most parts of Indonesia.

History

About 20 years ago, when we first travelled through the Pulau Batu Batu region, we were stunned by its beauty. Its geography has been compared to the islands off the north coast of Thailand, but this remote region of Indonesia is like no other. The local people are friendly: your travels here will be lined with a backdrop of smiling faces.

Ever since we started our travels, remote area construction and operation has been part of our lives, including our first project – Hinako’s Hideaway in the Hinako Islands – which ran for 15 years. With Telo Island Lodge, we have drawn from our experience and love of the area to create an exclusive, safe surfing holiday without equal.

Local Culture

Batu Islanders have a distinct, vibrant culture with a mix of Christian, Islamic and animist beliefs, many of which are cloaked in mystery and superstition. Life here – centered around the village – is played out in a sustenance economy based primarily on fishing and coconut farming. This is a culture strikingly different to western society. Batu Islanders are some of the most friendly, happy and family-oriented folks that you’ll ever come across. We encourage our guests to donate items to the local school whenever they visit as well as purchase locally made hand-crafts on the last day of their trip.

We strive to be a positive force in the local community. We purchase local building materials, labor and food, and undertake various sustainability initiatives and education projects. We aim to be both a positive presence, and to minimize our impact on this rich culture, and finely-balanced way of life.

Flights typically are routed through either Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia or Singapore. From any of these locations, you are then flown to the north Sumatran city of Medan, Indonesia, where you will be met on arrival by our representative at the Medan airport.

Depending on your arrival time, you will either be taken to the JW Marriott for an overnight stay or taken directly to our Grand Caravan charter aircraft for departure to the Telo Island Lodge.

Our fly-in-fly out chartered transfer is precisely what puts us ahead of the pack. No more worrying about when – or if – your plane flies today. We control the entire process and make sure it goes off without a hitch every time, on time….

Guests can relax and take in the scenery on the short 90-minute flight from Medan to the local airport Lasondre on the island of Tanah Masa. The airport is just a short boat ride from the resort where the empty waves and our smiling staff will be eagerly anticipating your arrival.

After a brief introduction to the lodge and safety protocols, then it’s simply a case of screwing in fins, waxing up, and heading out to surf the best waves on offer.
